Allandale Farm Tomatoes
Months ago, thousands of tomato seedlings were started in our greenhouses and nurtured through the harsh weather of early spring. Then planted out in our warming soils, seven thousand tomato plants are starting to bear fruit. First the small-fruited cherry, pear and grape tomatoes, then the early-season hybrids will be ready.
Within days the early heirlooms and the large-fruited hybrids will be picking heavily and the red tide of tomato season will be in full bore! We have had excellent crops the last couple of years and expect this year to be the best one yet. So far there is no sign of disease and no insect damage. However, as the fruits ripen, we will need to keep a sharp eye out for turkeys, crows and deer which all seem to have some affinity for our tomato crop. We expect to start the harvest about July 23rd. Call ahead if you need certainty!
